Design / User Interface

Westpac Originations.

As part of a digital transformation project, Westpac wanted to simplify the customer experience and user interface of their originations platform.

Brief.

Employing Atomic Design principles, Westpac dedicated substantial effort to integrate the fundamental components of their Design System. This encompassed achieving uniformity in typographic styles, colours, and basic form elements across the entire bank.

The surge of Neo banks intensified external competition, pressuring established banks to meet heightened customer expectations for UI design that seamlessly blends functionality with aesthetics.

Expanding upon the foundation of the existing Global Experience Language (GEL), Westpac aspired to streamline and modernise its UI design, enabling it to effectively contend with these emerging tech startups.

Design.

Inspired by the technical backend work being done, to simplify hundreds of complex databases in to one, the overall design strategy adopted was the classic less is more approach.

By decluttering unnecessary visual marks, simplifying overall page layouts, and reducing the number of visual templates, the customers is focused on the task at hand.

Simple and controlled typography extends the brand vision and leads the customer through a natural human conversation. The clean white space is only punctuated with accents of brand colour when the customers attention is required.

The overall design is simple, thoughtful and helpful, with a keen balance of form and function, allowing Westpac to compete visually with the Neo Banks.

Results.

The first financial product to utilise this new UI design was the Home Loans application form. Whilst the home loan application is complex and many customers still prefer the help of a banker, Westpac is now seeing an increase in self serviced end to end applications. Whereby more and more customers fill out the form with little or no assistance required. This in turn saved valuable time for bankers, allowing them to be able to focus on building better relationships with new and current clients.
